The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is dramatically increasing the amount it's spending to combat the coronavirus, pledging up to $100 million to help contain the outbreak. It offers paid family leave, but only to parents who are home with kids due to school closure.

Applicants have faced tech problems, rigorous criteria and, in some cases, banks that have already run out of money to give. Now some politicians want it back.

Companies with fewer than 50 workers can apply for hardship … The bill also includes carve-outs for many businesses, too.

The bill doesn’t address some of the broad societal changes that advocates have argued are necessary to stem the spread of the coronavirus, like expanded access to healthcare. Experts say one Senate proposal should be judged by how well it would get money to those who need it. Companies with more than 500 employees are exempt from the bill’s paid leave provisions.
