The DARPA Subterranean or “SubT” Challenge is a robotic competition that seeks novel approaches to rapidly map, navigate, and search underground environments. CSIRO's Data61's Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group is one of 11 teams selected worldwide to participate in the three-year DARPA Subterranean challenge, and is the only Australian entity.
The competition spans a period of three years.
Teams competing in that final event have the opportunity to win up to $2 million in funding from DARPA. Explorer is one of seven teams that will receive up to $4.5 million from DARPA to develop their hardware and software for the competition.
The virtual models are envisioned to feature vehicles with varying traits and methods in locomotion to assist robots in the challenge.
