Evacuations have been ordered, roads are washed out, and schools were closed in multiple counties across the state. Wide areas of Nebraska and Iowa are under water, with many rivers reaching record levels. The main river basins include the Little Missouri, Eastern Powder, Belle Fourche, Grand, Moreau, Cheyenne, Bad, White and Keyapaha River Basins. A series of disturbances associated with a persistent area of low pressure over the western half of the U.S. produced several rounds of heavy precipitation across western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, particularly near and east of the Black Hills and over the Cheyenne River and White River basins. The Black Hills Flood of 1972, also known as the Rapid City Flood, was the most detrimental flood in South Dakota history, and one of the deadliest floods in U.S. history.
