Varietal is a term generally used in the wine industry to describe a wine made from a specific variety of grape (example: Shiraz or Merlot); these varietals give the wine a particular taste and profile, and this also happens in the coffee. Centroamericano has also proven to have exceptional cup quality potential when well-managed at high altitudes. Coffee hybrids aren’t about to replace traditional varieties and cultivars. As a hybrid of the famed Sudan Rume varietal, combined with a research varietal derived from a Sarchimore, this coffee posses both the delicate floral and red fruit notes of a Sudan Rume whilst maintaining flavour intensity and a rich body. A first-generation (F1) hybrid originating from a cross between Caturra and an Ethiopian landrace from the CATIE collection (accession E531).. Centroamericano is resistant to coffee leaf rust, is extremely high yielding (in breeding evaluations, it showed production increases of 22–47% over the standard varieties in Central America). The variety was part of the first wave of F1 hybrid varieties created by a consortium including French research institute CIRAD, a regional network of national coffee institutes in Central America (PROMECAFE), and CATIE. There are many reasons why producers might choose to produce non-hybrid crops on their farm, and consumer interest in coffees like Gesha/Geisha, Bourbon, and Caturra will continue.
