Democratic People's Party (Turkish: Demokratik Halk Partisi, DEHAP) was a Kurdish political party in Turkey.DEHAP was founded 24 October 1997. Turkey under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the AKP has been described as becoming increasingly authoritarian. It was the continuation of the People's Democracy Party (HADEP), which was banned in March 2003 by the Constitutional Court on the grounds that it supported the Kurdistan Workers Party. Even before the constitutional referendum in 2017 the Council of Europe said the country had autocratic tendencies and warned of a "dramatic regression of [Turkey's] democratic order". Turkey’s anti-democratic turn has all taken place without much notice from the outside world. Nevertheless, Turkey today is a fairly stable country, where the vast majority of political groups agree that political competition should stay within the framework of a democratic parliamentary system.
