The lake is a spectacular turquoise colour due to finely ground rock in the glacial melted waters. This also applies to the areas around Lakes MacGregor and Alexandrina unless it is a permitted camping area. These are a great option for independent travellers on a budget. There are limited freedom camping areas in the Mackenzie region.
